Ms. Scott joined NHCS in 1996 as a 4th grade teacher. She later taught 8th grade math and served as Dean of the Middle School before becoming Assistant Headmaster in 2004. She has been Interim Head of School since September 2013.
One of the first charter schools in Massachusetts, NHCS opened its doors in 1995 and today serves 400 students in pre-K through 8th grade from Dorchester and surrounding neighborhoods. With a waiting list of over 2,000 children, it is one of the most sought-after public schools in Boston. NHCS has been a top performing Level 1 school since the designation existed, and has been commended by the state three times for high student growth.
Ms. Scott succeeds Kevin Andrews, who was Headmaster of the school from its founding until he stepped down in September 2013.
“Kate has been an important part of the NHCS community almost since its inception,” said Frederic Wittmann, Chair of NHCS’s Board of Trustees. “She is an outstanding instructional leader, and over the course of this year she has proven to the Board that she is an equally outstanding organizational leader.”
“NHCS is a very special place, thanks to our extraordinary teachers and staff and the students and families we serve,” said Ms. Scott. “I know the future promises great things for NHCS, and I am honored to be the one to lead us there.”
