A Letter from Retiring Headmaster Kevin Andrews
In June 1994, I was hired by Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses, Inc. to create a school. A very small group of us got together and began to work on the original design. Several months later, in 1995, we opened our doors for the very first time with a unique vision for a school that would give students in Dorchester the same opportunities and education as that provided in the best schools around the country. I truly believe that we have achieved that goal.
Over these last 18 years NHCS has become a beacon in the education reform movement. This achievement has been recognized through the accolades, awards, funding, and national acclaim that we have received. Our success has been a product of an extraordinary staff, which continually strives to do better every day. Striving for success is not merely an option at Neighborhood House, it is a requirement, and it is who we are. We have never settled, and our job continues.
With all that said, I am now able to comfortably look back and know that my job here is complete. I am deeply honored to have been a part of this school from its inception and through its incredible growth. You may not be aware that it has been increasingly difficult for me to keep up the pace I have set and maintained over the years, due to health issues related to post polio syndrome. For this reason, I have decided to step down as Headmaster effective August 31, 2013. I know that this announcement may come as a surprise, but I truly believe the time is right for me and for Neighborhood House.
I am very pleased to report that the Board has appointed Kate Scott as the Interim Head of School. Kate has been with NHCS for 17 years, most recently as Assistant Headmaster, and has been among my chief advisors from the very start. The Board and I have full confidence in the ability of Kate and the entire senior management team to operate the School at the same high performance level that students, parents, and staff expect. I know that Kate will do an excellent job and, with your full support, I know the school will continue on its path of excellence. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Kate with questions or to show your support. She can be reached at email@example.com or (617) 825-0703.
The past 18 years have been not only the highlight of my professional career, but have provided me with enormous personal fulfillment and pride. I thank all of you for what you have done for me, for the Neighborhood House Charter School and, most importantly, for our students.
